The Evolution of a "Day Off"
It’s officially a public holiday. But if you’re an entrepreneur, you already know the unwritten rule: "days off" usually just look like a different version of a workday. Whether the "Open" sign is flipped for clients or not, the grind never truly stops.
It’s a lifestyle choice, and honestly? It took me a long time to figure out how to navigate it.
The Evolution of a "Day Off"
Back in the early days of my career, holidays were a golden, unbreakable law. I forced myself not to work. Instead, I’d spend those days trying to overcompensate for my packed schedule by overspending on outings with loved ones. I was constantly running on the treadmill of trying to prove I wasn't working "too hard."
On the flip side, I constantly dealt with people diminishing my workflow. Because I worked online, people assumed I just had endless free time, or they’d try to find "real job" tasks for me to do. Back then, I called myself a freelancer or a designer. I kept myself small.
But by 2022, I hit a wall. It was time to either pivot drastically or quit entirely.
I chose to bet on myself. ๐
I secured my official architect credentials, overhauled my marketing strategy, and relaunched my social media with intention. I stopped hiding.
Shaking Off the Noise
Fast forward to recently. Someone sarcastically said to me: "Well, you don’t leave your house anyway, so you don’t mind if it’s raining. Must be nice to just love your job."
At first, it stung. It triggered that lingering insecurity about working from home instead of a corporate office. It made me feel, for a split second, like I was just "playing around" instead of building a thriving architectural practice.
But I chose silence over a defensive reaction. Some people speak out of ignorance, some think sarcasm is a personality trait, and others just have a classic case of foot-in-mouth syndrome. I took it with a grain of salt and shifted my perspective.
Because here is the real truth:
- Yes, I am incredibly privileged to build beautiful spaces from the comfort of my home while being present for my loved ones.
- Yes, I am deeply in love with this career.
- Yes, I am immensely proud of the work I deliver. I love the chaos, the blueprints, the creative breakthroughs, and even the stressful days.
Behind the Scenes: The "Slow-Paced" Holiday Reality
This year, my holidays aren't about overcompensating; they’re about intentional time management. Some days off are for deep-cleaning and mental resets. And some days off—like today—look exactly like this behind-the-scenes sneak peek:
- ✍️ Overcoming writer's block by pouring my heart into this exact blog post.
- ๐ Tweaking architectural plans to address the latest feedback from the building department (because local building regulations wait for no one!).
- ๐ Mapping out June’s content strategy and drafting upcoming reels to keep the business growing.
- ๐ฉฐ Switching hats to choreograph ballet goals and routines for my dance students.
- ๐ง Learning the art of the pause—forcing myself to take breaks so I don't burn out.
Today is slow-paced, but every single task is a stepping stone. More than anything, it’s a reminder that the life I am living right now is the exact dream I used to pray for.
To every entrepreneur, creator, and dreamer reading this: don't let anyone make you feel small for building your empire from the dining room table. Own your passion, block out the noise, and keep building.
