Tip 3: Always use building phases

Which building phases are most expensive?
The building process has the following expensive phases:  The foundation, the windows & doors, flooring, kitchen, tiling and paint.

How can I save money?
  • Use man power for making the concrete composition. This is cheaper than buying all ready made concrete.
  • Using smaller, less windows plus not that complex designs.
  • Use more panel doors. Try avoiding solid wooden and MDF doors.
  • Use cheaper alternatives for flooring instead of concrete floors.
  • Use mixture of MDF panels and laminates etc. Instead of solid wood for kitchen cabinets.
  • A gas stove is cheaper than a electrical or cook-top or a built in oven.
  • Countertop microwave is cheaper than a built in microwave.
  • Using natural lighting is cheaper for the kitchen instead of lighting under the top cabinets
  • Tiling is always pricey. So choose big tiles instead of the smaller ones. And make your tile grout instead of buying a ready mix.
  • Paint is always is expensive. Don't go cheap on the purchase. But the costs can be reduced in labor.
  • Make sure to choose installers that give you a step by step detailed budget.
  • Fluorescent tubes are cheaper than other lamps.
  • You can choose which faucets and sinks you'll like to splurge and which can be cheaper. Standard are always cheaper.
  • Use 2nd hand form work for building.
