Creativity | Day in the life RCD

Hello RCD readers,

Creativity lies in the ability to let go and embrace new things.

As all architectural designers in Suriname know we are dealing with a lot of miscalculated rules and regulations. These new rules and regulations are implemented to as quotes make the building permit process faster and better. But these actions will give different results.

People will start building illegally. Architects are not going to lower their prices. A chaotic and violent maybe events will take place. Because for a lot of architectural designer and builders this is the only income.

The questions of the day on everyone's mind
  • What do you think of the new rules and regulations?
  • What are you going to do now if these rules stay?
  • Will this effect you?
Mostly because everyone is trying to gain information to make decisions for themselves.

I'll give you some insights about some architectural designer's idea how to handle this.
  • Not quitting my day job and letting go of the designing dream career
  • Fighting with lawyers to make sure that this will be set right
  • Looking to get a master's in a way so that you can be accepted as an architect.
What do you think of the new rules and regulations?
  1. The whole way this was implemented was wrong.
    • time limit to get you affairs in order is too short
    • they are people in real life not students. In which the principle give rules and regulations without the aftermath because you are shaping the students in that school with this for a sense of order.
    • the chosen medium is offensive . You can't just write on Facebook and say in two days this will not be accepted from our ministry.
  2. Degrading people with BSc and Btech title by putting everyone in one boat
  3. Insulting everyone by giving options;
    • building permit possible only for houses up to 180m2
    • go work for or with an architect. This I found hilarious. No architect is willing to work with any of these people. No architectural designer will degrade themselves and go work for somebody after years of working for yourself. This whole concept is unrealistic and insulting for both parties.
    • the sudden job offers at the ministry. How insulting!! So you steal people their way of income but on the other hand you tell them you can work for me. Sorry but that's B****
  4. The statement of what architectural designer are capable of doing I know a lot of designers who have worked for architect's and construction companies that have enough know how to be called architect or engineer.  But that part of the law is somehow removed and the ministry has created their own requirements. If the rules and regulations are made we must be precise in what the building law prohibits as an architect. This is clear that the person that made these rules& regulations doesn't know a damn thing about building law.
  5. The title of architect given for anybody with a Masters. I know for a fact that we have people in the profession as an architect in which they haven't actually studied architecture but can now call themselves architect because the rule of having an Master title. This is totally unfair and bias. Plus a lot of so called companies should have their architect title removed because they actually don't have a masters at all.
  6. The problem with long waiting for building permits is actually that the system doesn't work. The ministry doesn't evolve with the times and that is the biggest stagnation of growth.
  7. The failed building attempts is not the fault of the architectural designer sometimes.
    • The ministry doesn't check extensively the drawings.
    • The building contractors don't know how to read drawings at all sometimes.
    • The client's sometimes change the design and material without talking to the architectural designer.
What are you going to do now if these rules stay?
That is where my weird creativity begins. The fact that the possibility exists that I won't be able to do my work in this extent that I want too.  What my options are I will have to figure out learn more over. But for now just wait and see...

Will this effect you?
Yes and no. Because no matter what happens I will still do something in architectural designing and I will be good at it.

Nobody can take away your vision. Only you have the power to destroy your dream by giving up. The rules may change. You may get curveballs. It may take longer. But the outcome is all you.

Have a blessed week
