From Vision to Vector: The Real Journey of Episode 16

​Episode 16 takes us back to a project that started last year with a client from Facebook who truly did his homework. There is something incredibly energizing about working with a professional who arrives with a "dream house" already living in the back of his mind.

​When a client is that prepared, the feedback loop is sharp and intentional. They understand that in architecture, every line drawn represents an investment. Here is a look behind the scenes at how we turned those thoughts into a technical reality.

​The Digital Handshake: Why the Form Matters

​We live in a digital-first world, and I’ve embraced that in my workflow. Before we ever step foot on a site, I start with an online intake form. It’s a simple Google Form, but it’s my most essential tool for gathering:

• ​Project Scope: The area in m^2 so I can provide a realistic estimate.
• ​Service Needs: Exactly what documentation is required.
• ​Timeline: Ensuring our schedules and expectations align.

​A lot of people want to skip the "paperwork" and jump straight to the "what," but without these details, I can’t give you an accurate roadmap. For me, this phase is about readiness. If a client isn't ready to be transparent about their budget or area requirements, they might not be ready for the design process quite yet. I’m not here to be the "cheapest" option; I’m here to provide a specific level of professional service that ensures your investment is protected.

​The First Sketch & The "Free" Consultation

​After the initial digital introduction, we moved to a one-on-one consultation. This is where the magic starts. I’ve always kept my first consultation free because it’s a discovery phase—I’m learning the soul of the project.

​Once we established the price and timeline and the land parcel map was in hand, the work truly began. With the advance payment secured, I could dive into creating a layout that fit his specific plot perfectly while respecting every one of his preferences.

​Why 3D is More Than Just a "Pretty Picture"

​We had a great discussion about 3D modeling. While everyone loves the "Wow" factor of a beautiful render (and I’m working on leveling up those visuals even more this year!), for my clients, 3D is a functional tool. It’s about:

• ​Proportions: Getting a true feel for the dimensions.
• ​Interior Flow: Visualizing how the design works from the inside out.
• ​Error Proofing: Catching layout "misses" that aren't always obvious on a 2D plane.

​We kept the momentum going with weekly email updates. I truly appreciated this client’s dedication—every technical detail was discussed during the design phase, ensuring nothing was a last-minute afterthought.

​The Definitive Design & The Dirt

​Reaching the final design took some time, primarily because we had to coordinate closely with the contractor regarding the construction phase. We were working with clay soil, which requires specific technical attention. From the ground conditions to the placement of the electricity, we tackled the "boring" technical stuff that most people ignore but that actually makes a house a home.

​The Next Chapter

​The building permit phase has officially just begun. It’s a waiting game now, but we are hoping for the best!
