Throwback Thursday June 4th 2020
This Throwback Thursday I'm discussing my graduation subject. On July 4th 2014 I graduated with 8.0 from Anton de Kom University. My thesis title was making a preliminary design for IAAF class A athletic stadium in Suriname.
Link of 3 part playlist:
Extra research:
- athletic stadiums in the Caribbean, green oriented etc.
- IAAF rules and regulations
- studying an older project proposal for an athletics stadium (the company where I did my intern at)
- Research of complex ways of doing location research (coarse to fine outlook)
- 2 different survey's ;
- oral survey to athletic group owners
- survey to athletes
My thesis was split in 3 different subject:
1) The location research
The location ended up being Lelydorp, De Craneweg. This was a big discussion under my work and school supervisor. But I would choose somewhere else if I did the research again now. Because a lot of urban development in Suriname since 2014. But this took a lot of research because I needed to learn how to do a location research for this stadium with the location requirements of IAAF.
2) The program of requirements
The program requirements took a lot of reading. Information about IAAF Class A rules and regulation, research of own athletic groups in Suriname their special needs. I didn't get a lot of input of the person that hired me for this subject but I did get from other little athletic groups that did bother to give me the time of day. I'd learned about :
- the different functions in a athletic stadium ,
- the people involved during games, staff meetings, practices etc
- the complex spatial route of each user
- the requirements technical, functional etc for different rooms
- the different rooms for practice, games, commercial, safety etc
3) The preliminary design
This was overall not my favorite design nor my first choice actually. But I need to finish and my supervisors wanted the end inspiration choice. I didn't go further with construction calculations and maintenance and management plan. Of course the same reason I had to finish my thesis.
